Javier Zumarraga: “The US market is very competitive, but has enormous potential”

In collaboration with the SPRI Group, - the Basque Government's business development agency - CMZ has participated in a video interview in which Javier Zumarraga, head of international sales, reviews two key milestones that will mark the company's future in the coming years: the start up of a new production plant in Berriz and the opening of CMZ USA, its first subsidiary outside Europe. Both projects are reinforcing the company's internationalisation strategy and its commitment to sustained growth in new markets.

To continue growing

With over 80 years' experience as manufacturers of CNC lathes, we have a clear philosophy, to produce reliable, long-lasting, high precision machines. "The machine tools market has responded well to our proposal," says Javier, "so much so that demand has often exceeded our production capacity". This commitment, together with the vertical integration of producing over 80% of our components has enabled gradual growth over time.

CMZ has 7 in-house manufacturing plants, dedicated to both the assembly and machining of components for its lathes. In recent years, the company has also introduced large machinery to increase the production of parts such as benches and carriages. Over 40,000 m2 dedicated exclusively to a product with a useful life of more than 20 years.

Currently, the construction project for the new headquarters and assembly unit on a 22,000 m2 plot in Berriz is one of our major commitments. This facility will house assembly of the new lathe model already being developed. "The new plant in Berriz will enable us to achieve a production capacity of 800 machines a year", explains Javier.

Internationalisation Plan: CMZ USA

One of the most ambitious challenges in our international expansion plan has been our entry into the North American market. In 2025, CMZ took a step forward by forming CMZ USA, its first subsidiary outside the old continent.

Setup in Boston, Massachusetts, the new headquarters is strategically located to serve demand from the United States and Canada. The subsidiary will operate with its own team, an extensive distribution network, and a permanent stock of 40 machines-ensuring a fast and efficient response to the needs of the local market.

The opening of CMZ USA represents both a logistical and commercial challenge, but also a significant opportunity. "Although it's a highly competitive market, the United States holds great potential for CMZ, which we aim to tap into with our new team based in Boston", says Javier. With a range of CNC lathes capable of meeting all types of production needs, CMZ is well-prepared to meet the high demand for its products in North America.
